Before you make an offer in Sekotong

The southwest peninsula most visitors never reach

Sekotong runs along the southwest arm of Lombok, an hour and a half from Mataram on a road that gets quieter the further you go. Calm bays, fishing villages, pearl farms in the shallows, and a scatter of small islands offshore — Gili Gede, Gili Nanggu, Gili Asahan — that look like the famous Gilis did thirty years ago.

Cheap because of the road, not because of the coast

This is the most affordable coastline on the island, and the reason is access rather than quality. The water here is calmer than the south coast and the bays are genuinely beautiful. What is missing is the infrastructure: fewer sealed roads, thinner mobile coverage, and services that stop early.

A long-horizon place, not a quick one

Buyers here are usually taking a view on the next decade rather than the next season. Small eco-resorts, dive operations and private retreats fit the setting. Mass tourism does not, and nothing about the current road suggests it is coming soon.

As a permanent home it suits people who genuinely want distance. Schools and hospitals mean a drive to Mataram. That is a real cost, and it should be priced in before the view does the deciding.

Questions that matter more here than elsewhere

Water supply first, since piped supply thins out along the peninsula. Electricity capacity second — an existing connection does not guarantee enough load for a commercial kitchen or several air conditioners. Then access: confirm the road to the plot is a legal right of way, not an arrangement with a neighbour. Old mining activity in parts of Sekotong also makes it worth asking what the land was used for before.
